Originally designed by famed architect William Gibbons Preston in the
Romanesque Revival Style, the Saunders Castle at Park Plaza is a designated
National Historic Landmark. The structure was originally built as an Armory for
the First Corps of Cadets of Massachusetts, who assisted in local and national
peacekeeping efforts. The cornerstone was laid in 1891, and construction was
completed in 1897, including a drawbridge, a moat, numerous turrets, andbeautiful
touches such as a carved, winged dragon. At various times throughout itshistory,
the Armory served as headquarters for the Cadets, headquarters for the Veterans
Association of the Corps., The Museum of the Military Historical Society, The
Museum of the First Corp., and the Civil War Museum of the Loyal Legion.
In 1966 the Corps sold the property to a real estate investor, paving the wayfor the
Armory to take on a new role in Boston: Distinctive event space with historicflair
in the heart of the city. Since 1976, this unique property (often called“Boston’s
Castle”) has been under the stewardship and management of Saunders Real Estate.
Happenings at the Saunders Castle over the years have included Boston Balletand
Boston Lyric Opera performances, Downton Abbey: The Exhibition, major
UNICEF events, numerous charity and benefit galas, and movie filming by major
film studios – as well many other events of local, national and international
significance.
